Affordable, reliable and built for the open ocean

The Internet of Things on the oceans is no longer cost-prohibitive. The Solar Sentinel 100 is designed for both offshore and nearshore applications. At just 199 cm in length, it is compact enough to be classified as a small boat—avoiding more onerous regulatory requirements—yet capable of remarkable endurance and performance. Whether loitering at a waypoint for months or crossing an ocean to collect data from a world away, this vessel delivers.

Powered by a 100-watt solar panel, Solar Sentinel cruises steadily at 2.5 knots and can reach just under 4 knots. In ultra-efficient mode, it consumes only 5 watts to maintain nearly 2 knots.

Despite its size, the vessel is engineered to withstand severe weather, including storm conditions up to hurricane force. It can still make headway in winds up to 40 knots.

Modular Power & Intelligence

At the core of the Solar Sentinel is a modular electrical system. Its dual-processor architecture supports both ultra-low-power operation and high-performance modes for complex tasks—while also providing processor redundancy. The system is designed for makers and developers, making it simple to integrate custom sensors and payloads. Our open-source software builds on the communities around ArduPilot and Raspberry Pi, allowing users to either deploy a plug-and-play solution or customize freely.

Onboard data storage is virtually unlimited with SSD support. Data can be retrieved via Wi-Fi or USB when docked, or streamed in real time via LTE.

The Sentinel’s electronics hub is equipped with:

  • Inputs: I²C, CAN, SPI, UART, Ethernet, analog, digital, plus seven USB ports (with a switchable hub).

  • Outputs: PWM, audio, 7.4 V, 5 V, and 12 V rails (many switch-controlled).

  • Built-in sensors: precision accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer on the main PCB.

Daily solar yield in typical spring–fall conditions ranges from 300–600 Wh, supporting continuous cruising just under 2 knots on only 8 watts total (electronics, comms, and thruster combined). Payload capacity is up to 6 kg.
